First, categorise the water

Clean supply from a washing-machine hose is not the same as storm ingress mixed with garden soil, and neither is sewage. The more contaminated the water, the less “clean the carpet” is the right sentence. When in doubt, keep people off it and photograph everything. The action list is in water damage first steps.

The first 24 hours

• Stop the source if it is safe
• Power off if water is near outlets — get a licensed electrician if needed
• Lift drapes and small furniture; do not drag wet feet across dry rooms
• Extract standing water
• Air movers and dehumidification beat opening one window in a humid week
• Do not sprinkle supermarket powder and walk away

Insurance documentation

When carpet cannot be saved

Delaminated backing, sewage, long dwell in tropical weather, or swelling of the substrate can make replacement the only honest path. A restoration clean is for salvageable fibre after extraction and dry-down.
